In the Edo period when fire was daily happening as they said "Fire and fight are the flowers of Edo," firemen were the popular hero. Especially "Matoimochi" was a dangerous role to notify others the origin of fire with waving a Matoi in the flames and was the star performer because the most beautiful young man among the group was singled out for the task.

「火事とケンカは江戸の華」と言われるほど火事が多かった江戸時代で、庶民のヒーローは消防士でした。中でも「纏持ち」は炎の中で纏を降り火元を知らせる危険な役目で、組の中で最も美形の若者が選ばれるため、火消の花形でした。
